Surface mounted door closers are the most widely used type of hydraulic door closer; the main body and the arm are attached directly to the surface of the door frame.
Concealed (recessed) door closers have their main body embedded within a slot at the top of the door leaf. When the door is closed, the unit is completely hidden, leaving no visible hardware protruding from the surface of the door.
