So here are the steps to install the door closer:
1. Unpack the door closer and place all parts on a flat surface. You may want to grab a piece of cardboard or a large sheet of paper to organize everything and make sure the accessories are complete. If you lose an accessory, you will run out of accessories. Also, keep all tools nearby.
2. Grab the template and align it wherever you want it on the door. Almost all door closers have a template that allows you to outline where it's going. This can also help you figure out where the holes are, and if the door closer will fit in your doorway.

3. Align the door closer with the outline and mark the hole with a marker, pen or pencil. This step is critical, so seek help if needed. Even one hole that is misaligned can affect the integrity of the door closer. It will break faster than it should, or you will leave a pointless hole in the door.
4. (Optional) Use the center hole punch to mark holes wherever you placed the points with the marker. This will create a guide for you to start the pilot hole in the next step, but it will also create the path for your drill. If you're used to working with wood and metal, you already know the benefits.
5. Using one of the above drill bits (3.5mm head, 5.1mm metal), drill pilot holes at each marked point. Make sure to pulse the drill bit to prevent excess chip spillage. Try to figure out what the interior material of the door is made of.
6. Clean your workspace by brushing off excess debris with a rag. If you leave it behind, debris can get caught in the screws and loosen the fixture. Additionally, it can trap moisture, which can lead to corrosion and rust. If you're concerned, you can use a rust spray on the holes before inserting the screws.
7. Line up the door closers with the holes and drill holes in each. Make sure you don't drill them too tight or you might strip the screws. Try to drill about 50% of each screw to make sure every point is screwed in place. After that, you can go back to each and tighten all the way.
8. Test your installation by removing all tools and letting the door close on its own. If you're happy with how fast it closes, then you're done. However, you can adjust the latching and closing speed by turning the respective screws. Increase the speed counterclockwise, decrease the closing speed clockwise.
